This has more to do with my changing views on realism in entertainment and art than anything specifically to do with GI Joe, mind you. Still, you never know, I could come back around again on my way of thinking. And thanks of course, for reading.
Well, I suppose it all depends on what you want out of what you started. A lot of what I do is just for my own personal edification. I've spent a lot of time collecting random/obscure info pertaining to the line in all of its different incarnations, and have tried to work it all together in a more realistic and coherent world, because 1.) I love to write, 2.) I love military history and modern tech, and 3.) I love GI Joe. I figured I'd try to work these together, but I realized that if I ever wanted to do something professionally (i.e., earn a living from), that it would be incredibly difficult to do so with copyrighted characters - even more so because in addition to Hasbro, it's also licensed through Mavel and Paramount. So a few years ago I decided to go the route of creating my own GI Joe-ish force that resided in an alternate world that spans not only one where technology is a bit further along, but one where the supernatural horrors of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos can be applied. I've gotten a lot of the basic story arc (spanning over 120 years worth), and have written a fair amount of the first story, but I stepped back to reevaluate
how
I'd like to present it. Not as a graphic novel, but not just a traditional novel either. I'm kind of hung up on this one point, and in the meantime have returned to my own reenvisioning of Hama's GI Joe vs. Cobra story.
But why? Mainly, it makes me happy. When I have the time to spend on it, I enjoy escaping the real world and all of its miserable problems and creating something that I enjoy, even if it probably will never accomplish anything more than that one thing. But the nice thing about communities like the Tank here is that you can share what you do and get a lot of positive feedback from others who enjoy the same thing.
