Titanic on blu-ray: Great film looks and sounds even better in high def, an emotional masterpiece i saw 9 times in theaters when i was a teenager and Cameron doesn't let me down.
Fritz The Cat and Nine Lives of Fritz The Cat: Two fun, sleazy and hilarious cult animated comedy classics with the first one being a landmark movie for being the world's first x-rated animated movie and predates hentai. Who thinks these 2 movies are responsible for the furry fandom? if you have heard of that fandom, i happen to be a furry myself since i had a crush on Cleo on Heathcliff and Cheetara on Thundercats 27 years ago and i should say these 2 animated movies are cult classics that may not be for everyone but worth seeing to see how they made history.
The Aristocats on blu-ray: a disney classic that looks and sounds terrific in blu-ray, loved this since i saw it 4 times in theaters in it's 87 re-issue when i was a kid.
The Hunger Games on blu-ray: a pleasant surprise of a movie, i really enjoyed it and one of the year's most enjoyable films. Reminds me of Battle Royale, Running Man, Death Race 2000, Rollerball and Turkeyshoot aka Escape 2000 in some ways and Jennifer Lawrence is a hottie.
Halloween movie viewing this month since it's Halloween season.
Blood Diner: Disgusting, gory and silly 1987 horror comedy in the tradition of Re-Animator, HG Lewis's movies and the Tales from The Crypt episode "What's Cooking" , it's not for everyone or a weak stomach. It's about 2 brothers who resurrect their dead uncle's evil brain as they are cannibalistic brothers who slaughter some people to appase a blood goddess then serve their carcasses for food at their diner.
Psycho (1960) on blu-ray: What can i say, a timeless horror thriller masterpiece that looks and sounds absolutely flawless on blu-ray. My all time fave horror movie since i was 5 and one of the most perfect films ever.
Jaws on blu-ray: Another masterpiece of horror that has never looked and sounded better in high def with a quality picture that looks flawless and has a great documentary added to it with the other extras.
Creepshow on blu-ray: 80s horror masterpiece from George Romero that got me loving horror movies when i was 4 when my bigger brother rented this movie on video and it did creeped me out but enjoyed it. The cast is awesome and the soundtrack rules, this is like a comic come to life and a wonderful tribute to EC comics.
Creepshow 2: Underrated sequel that has a cult following of it's own like the original movie, the creepiest i can't tell is either Raft or Hitcher. I saw this 4 times in theaters when i was a kid and loved it as much as the original.
Misery on blu-ray: Looks ok in blu-ray, a true 90s horror/suspense/thriller classic and my fave King movie besides Shawshank, Green Mile, Creepshow and whatever. Kathy Bates is terrific and creepy as the manical fan and James Caan is great as the writer/victim, i saw this 4 times in theaters when i was a kid and loved it.
Street Trash: 80s cult gross out horror comedy classic that i rented when i was 10 as it amused me yet disgusted me at the same time. It's about bums who are sold a special banned brand of liquor that can make them literally melt or explode, it stars Pat Ryan Jr. who is known to play the evil mayor in Toxic Avenger and the foreman in Class of Nuke Em High.
Nosferatu (1922): one of the best horror movies ever and i own the 2-disc DVD and this has been a personal fave since high school, such a creepy classic that despite being a silent film it can still scary and i like how the vampire is like a rat here and one of Cinema's first vampires.
Island of Lost Souls blu-ray: A 30s horror/sci-fi classic that is still the best adaptation of the novel Island of Dr. Moreau by HG Welles and Bela does one of his best roles ever as a mutant of Moreau, Charles Laughton is creepy as the mad scientist. Loved this since i was 12 when i rented it on video.
Freaked: Anyone remember this kick-ass and hilarious yet fun sci-fi horror comedy from Alex Winter (stars writes, directs and co-produces) with Randy Quaid, Mr. T, Bobcat Goithweit and Brooke Shields? loved it since i was 12 when i saw it in theaters and became a fave of mine. It's great halloween viewing for those who want a good laugh, it's like a live-action cartoon brought to life as it's basically Island of Dr. Moreau meets Freaks, Animaniacs and Monty Python.
Videodrome on blu-ray: Science Fiction horror combo thriller from David Cronenberg that is his ultimate masterpiece and one of the best films of the combined genres. James Woods and Debbie Harry do excellence performances here and the make-up by Rick Baker is disgusting but unique, i saw this in junior high on video and found it mesmerizing as it was like nothing i've ever seen. It looks and sounds great in high def too.
Parents (1989): Creepy, darkly funny and gruesome horror comedy with Randy Quaid about what the title is on their secret ingredients of what they serve for dinner. I rented it when i was 9 and thought it was creepy as hell but enjoyable with a nice twist in the end.
The Nightmare Before Christmas on blu-ray: A 90s animated classic that looks and sounds flawless in blu-ray, i saw this 5 times in theaters when it came out and one of my fave animated movies. It's a shame it became associated with Hot Topic but it has died down for a while as now it's at disney parks with the merchandise.
Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer on blu-ray: Absolutely horrific, realistic and compelling shocker that goes for the jugular but frightens the audience as it's based on actual murders done by Henry Lee Lucas. I remembered when i was 14 when i rented it after hearing good things about it in magazines like Fangoria and movie review books/guides with all that including the net, i had to rent it and MY GOD it horrifed me and i had nightmares. This controversial movie is also a masterpiece of horror cinema too and introduced Michael Rooker before Slither and Walking Dead, it also looks decent in blu-ray.
Maniac (1980) on blu-ray: One of the most horrific films ever made that looks terrific and sounds great in high def. This stomach churning shocker with Joe Spinell has realistic gore make-up by Tom Savini, i rented this when i was 11 and it disturbed me especially with those scalping scenes as i felt sick.
V/H/S in theaters: An excellent found footage horror anthology and one of the best found footage genre films and made by the same man who made House of the Devil as Ti West is one of the most promising horror directors in recent memory.
REC 3 in theaters: Improves over part 2 and manages to be an excellent sequel that feels more in the Dead Alive (aka Braindead) tradition, gory and exciting.
Halloween (1978) on blu-ray: What can i say? a flawless horror masterpiece that everyone watches during this season, no doubt it looks terrific and the sound is great in high def.
Halloween II (1981) on the 2-disc collector's edition blu-ray: Great extension sequel to the 1978 classic and the extended TV cut fills in the gaps of the original theatrical cut. Shout Factory rocks at doing horror and sci-fi movie DVDs and their collector's edition blu-ray/DVD combo is superb.
Halloween III Season of the Witch blu-ray: Very misunderstood sci-fi horror shocker! you see Carpenter had enough of Michael and decided to end his story with the climax of Halloween 2. He came up with a concept to transform the series into a big screen horror anthology of different horror stories every halloween season and this was the first and only attempt to turn the franchise into that. Unfortunately he didn't tell the public this concept or marketed it, thus it confused audiences and failed but manage to find a cult following for it's experimental idea. A very creepy underrated movie with a great performance by Tom Atkins and the film is very Lovecraft esque too as you gotta dig that score as well.
