If true, that is very
Golden Eye
and represents the most realistic way to handle the character.
As for the actual thread...
I haven't had a whole lot of warm fuzzies over this movie, as anyone reading the other Levitt thread might have noted, but I don't think JGL is a bad actor by any stretch. I've seen a couple of his smaller independant films and he's pretty good. (Or at least as good as you can take away from some independant films that play out like a bleak, depressing morning after smoking weed all night.) Everyone has seen Ewan McGreggor in movies like
Trainspotting
and
Big Fish
, but we've also seen him in movies like
The Phantom Menace
. Levitt has been busting his ass to make a career for himself outside his work as a child actor and no one can blame him for taking a role in a big budget summer movie like G.I. Joe, even if the movie ends up sucking. Don't shoot the messenger, ya know? When I envisioned this movie after hearing it was going to be made, I said exactly what I've been saying for years about a live action Joe movie: that Cobra Commander should be played by Jeremy Irons. (and we've all carefully stepped over a few of his movies like they were a pile of dog shit we didn't expect to be lying there on the sidewalk) But this is a franchise that's going to start at the beginnning of it's version of the story, not in the middle of it as was the case with Star Wars. So if they're going to start at the beginning and tell a back story, then there's no reason for the character to be played by a 60 year old actor. There's no shortage of things to complain about, but the actor himself isn't one of them.
We all have our own visions of this property; our own ideas on how it would be best served by this film. This isn't like Star Wars where the story was laid out in pretty clear terms and then Lucas came along and tossed those 20 year old facts out the window so he could sell us his revised cgi-gasm, disney movies and the merchandise that went with it. Everyone involved in this film has been up-front about the changes, and we all know that those changes are a must if this film is going to be even superficially believable. This is Hasbro greenlighting a project to sell us their toys, which is all GI Joe has ever been. It's always been one huge toy commercial. That doesn't mean that it can't be handled seriously, though. I think that Levitt will take his role seriously, even if Mr. Sommers doesn't. That's not a very appealing position to find yourself. Just ask Ewan McGreggor or Liam Neeson what they think of the Star Wars Prequels.
Channing Tatum, on the other hand, strikes me as a dreadful choice. That was the news that turned my stomach and set my mind against this movie as soon as I heard it. I've not seen
Stop Loss
, but if the few minutes of teen movies I've seen him in are an indication of his acting abilities then my initial reaction was totally justified. I don't think any of us were expecting academy award performances from a G.I. Joe movie, but I think we're all expecting more than a model-turned-actor performance, which is what I've always seen of him. Have any of you guys ever had a conversation with a model?
