Yes, I believe the Air Force was considering the F-14 but went with the cheaper F-15 which they felt was a superior fighter, plus they were still using the F-111A, which was their primary interceptor.
Glad to have you back man. We thought you'd abandoned this place for good.
It's not like the Joes needed help to sell in those days, but how perfectly would that have fell into place had they put the Skystriker, Navy pilot Ace, and the Flagg out again when Top Gun hit the theaters? I'll admit, that when I was kid, I wouldn't have made the distinction between Air Force Ace and a Navy Ace. But I loved Top Gun and I loved GI Joe. If they would have put them out again shortly after the movie, I know it would have been on my Christmas list. As it was, I had to improvise. The grocery stores in South Dakota used to sell an olive drab F-15. It had a two seater cockpit that could accomodate Joes provided they didn't have a holster molded to their legs. It came with 4 oversized orange missiles, but did have landing gear that went up and down. It was actually not a bad toy for a cheap grocery store item. I flew that off my improvised Flagg (our picnic table with a cooler sitting on it to act as the bridge). I did have a genuine certified GI Joe Tomahawk to fly my rescue missions though. Ah memories.
