Synopsis
:
As this issue opens, a U.S. research station at the North Pole recently has been attacked. Uncertain exactly what happened, the U.S. military sends in four members of the G.I. Joe team – Stalker, Breaker, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes – to determine whether the Russians at a nearby arctic research station had anything to do with the attack.
Upon arriving at the Russian station, the Joe team discovers that the crew is dead. What’s more, the station houses an ultra-low frequency wave transmitter, designed to affect human emotions by generating fear and paranoia. The Joes also encounter Kwinn, an imposing Eskimo who wears a weasel skull necklace and wields a .30 caliber machine gun. Kwinn turns out to be quite an adversary and manages to get the better of the Joes. After confiscating their guns, Kwinn reveals he was hired by the Russian government to recover the frequency modulator from the “fear” machine. Apparently, the Russians in the station were beaming fear waves at the U.S. but themselves succumbed to its effects. Filled with paranoia, the Russian crew killed the American scientists before dying of exposure. After finishing his story, Kwinn leaves the Joes – lacking supplies – to die in the cold as he races to deliver the modulator to Russian agents waiting at the coast.
Yet all is not lost. In grand MacGyver fashion, the G.I. Joe team manages to construct an ice boat out of parts from a downed airplane. They race to head off Kwinn before his rendezvous. Kwinn manages to avoid an ambush and again has the Joes at gunpoint. It becomes clear the Eskimo is conflicted – he abhors giving the modulator to the Russians but he must uphold his contract. Once more, Kwinn takes off on his sled to deliver the modulator as scheduled. The Russians get their prize, but Kwinn has more tricks up his sleeve. He gave the Joes their weapons back but left the firing pins on his weasel skull necklace a mile behind. As they wait for their submarine to come and take them home, the Russian agents must get to the firing pins before the G.I. Joe team, who start out four miles away from the necklace. The issue closes with a scene of Stalker, Breaker, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes marching in the snow...Snake Eyes is wearing the weasel skull necklace.
Review
(out of 4 stars):
One of the all-time G.I. Joe classics, this issue has a clear, tight plot line with a superb and memorable ending. To top it off, this comic introduces fan-favorite Kwinn, who plays an important part in subsequent story lines. This story was instrumental in developing my love for G.I. Joe as a 9-year-old, and it remains one of my favorites. As tribute to this issue, Hasbro recently released a Snake Eyes figure, wearing a parka and weasel skull necklace, as part of its 25th Anniversary line.
Memorable quotes
:
“My God! Th-that face…” – Military officer, after seeing Snake Eyes without his mask.
“They are four miles from it to your one…but they are trackers…and you are not!” – Kwinn, describing the precarious situation he has left for the Russian agents.
