You guys know how we always talk about Hasbro letting their US federal trademark registration for certain codenames lapse? Hence why we have Joes getting re-named every so often (Shockwave --> Shockblast, Mainframe --> Dataframe, Heavy Metal --> Speed Metal, etc.)?
You ever wonder if the guys who end up taking over those federal trademark registrations are just "squatters" or if they actually make action figures that use those names?
I think I just found one (somebody tell me if this is old news, cause this is the first time I've seen it).
Chap Mei, the Chinese company that makes the Soldier Force toys and the TRU-exclusive True Heroes line, actually has a character called "Colonel Hawk" (he's the second guy from the right in

). Considering that Chap Mei has been making toys since the 1970s, I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones who swept in and claimed the "Hawk" federal trademark registration for 1:18 figures back in the day (which led Hasbro to stop using the simple "Hawk" moniker for package labeling and resulted in toys based on the character being labeled on their package and advertising as "General Hawk" in 1991, "General Tomahawk" in 2000, "General Abernathy" in 2004, "GI Joe Hawk" in 2008, and "Clayton 'Hawk' Abernathy" in 2009).
