Same with Sparks. He was in the MASS Device as the "base guy", which is how I think most of us end up using him in our Joe-verses.
But where did he come from? Who created him? Why was he created and used and not Breaker?
The funny thing about Sparks, too, is that
in his earliest cartoon appearances
, he actually looks more like
the card art version of Breaker
(clean-shaven, wears a green uniform) figure than
the cartoon version of Breaker himself
(sports a beard, wears a dark gray uniform). It's almost like the guys at Sunbow saw the card art for the original 1982 Breaker figure, saw that it didn't look too much like the actual toy it came with, and decided to make a new cartoon-only character based on the card art design.

Conventional wisdom would have it that this is just due to over exposure in the comic. But I think his increasingly complex back story took away from the mystery that made him really unique to begin with.

Funnily enough, I think Larry Hama would end up making the same sort of miscalculation during the latter portion of his writing stint on
Wolverine
(although from interviews, I think this was more of an editorially-driven decision than a creative one). When a character's been a "mystery man" for so long, there's just no way revelations will ever live up to the collective fantasies of the readership. Somebody, if not everybody, will come away from the experience of finding out about the character's past feeling some measure of disappointment, not necessarily because the execution is poor, but because the sustained mystery is part of the character's appeal and no amount of revelatory twists, turns, and surprises can make up for the loss of that aspect. There's always going to be that little voice at the back of your head going "that's it?"
