Always thought a modern PoC-styled re-working of Dial-Tone (preserving the black beret) would make sense as a USAF JTAC, if they weren't going to go the SOF/SF route (it helps distinguish him from Breaker, anyway, who I think makes more sense as an SF Commo sergeant because of his fluency in multiple languages). Before the black beret became standard-issue in the Army, Air Force JTACs were the only guys besides the 75th RR who were authorized to wear the black beret, and the line in Dial-Tone's original filecard that says "no artillery support, no airstrikes, no medvac, no extraction, no NOTHING! The cavalry ain't comin' until the man with the radio tells 'em to," perfectly summed up what a USAF joint terminal attack controller does (direct fires from artillery and close air support, assists pathfinders with tactical air traffic control, serves as a field radio unit, etc.).
I hadn't thought about using Dial-Tone as a JTAC, Zulu. That's a pretty good idea. I had always envisioned him as a Ranger RTO or FO to explain the black beret but JTAC makes sense too.
