There's always been a heavy level of sci-fi/fantasy elements in RAH, ever since it first began with the '82's selection of laser rifle troops and jet pack infantry. The variations in real and fictional concepts varied throughout the years but the RAH G.I. Joe line has always skirted with the type of espionage fantasy concepts that have been found in other spy/military media like James Bond and Mission Impossible.
Our generation's version of G.I. Joe has always been more Avengers, then the Dirty Dozen.
Besides COBRA has always been the more experimental-tech oriented side in the conflict which if you think about it was probably a smart move on Hasbro's part back in the 80's. Kids who wanted something closer to real world military toys played with the Joes while the ones who prefered more sci-fi and 'radical' designs gravitated towards COBRA.
That was always the appeal to G.I.JOE to me. I like SciFi stuff, I like Military stuff, so why not put them together. Now I agree after '86/'87 things got a little weird vehicles and figures, but there are some "gems" in there. A nice balance is all I'm saying. I think it also makes for a longer lasting interest too.
