The funny thing is, it would all be so much "cleaner" if they'd simply reversed the chronological order of his service affiliations: It would make so much more sense if he started out as an enlisted Marine (maybe as a rifleman and scout-sniper), joined the FBI after doing his stint in the military, eventually made his way onto the bureau's famed HRT, and then was "loaned out" by the FBI to the GI Joe team as a prior-service civilian law enforcement specialist. This still doesn't address the captain's bars on the toy, but it at least follows what happens in the real world more closely. I don't have any actual numbers on me, but I'm willing to bet my PoC Low-Light that there are significantly more FBI special agents who served as enlisted Marines prior to joining the bureau than there are Marines (officer or enlisted) who used to be FBI special agents.

Well, as Stormgard mentioned so eloquently, as long as it works out in your head (or in our little thread's "collective head"), it's all good. There are so many inconsistencies with the character's filecard and the toy design that you can really go with it any number of different ways and it would all be plausible.

Ah, I didn't make myself clear in that post. I wasn't speculating on the existence of an "FBI police officer."
They do exist
, and each of the FBI's 56 field offices actually has its own FBI Police SWAT Team. These guys aren't FBI special agents, they're cops whose jurisdiction is pretty much limited to FBI installations (although this is obviously extended when they're performing executive protection duties).

The funny thing about Chuckles is how he's evolved from being a CID guy to a spook. When he first appeared in issue #60 of the Marvel comic book, he really was portrayed as a CID investigator (IIRC, he was investigating a couple of corrupt Pentagon/DoD officials who'd stolen a solid-fuel missile). At some point though, it seemed like the people involved with writing the stories for Hasbro (Hama and all the other people who came after him) forgot about his CID background (and the CID special agent's primary duty, which is to investigate crimes committed by and/or directly or indirectly affecting military personnel) and basically just started portraying him as a "secret agent" type.
I do agree that he'd make more sense as a WO than a sergeant, especially since he's repping the CID in a large-ish organization.

Hawk (O5) - a lower rank puts him closer to the action at the begining of Joe story with room for several promotions throughout the years.
Steeler (E6) - tank commanders are typically staff sergeants, unless they are the platoon leaders or platoon sergeants.
Stalker (E7) - he typically assumes the role of a squad leader, but equally makes a great platoon sergeant and a rank of SFC would better fit his 14 years of military service, including a tour in Vietnam in '68.
Rock N Roll (E6) - I think he would be well suited as a Weapons Squad Leader.
Snakes Eyes (E6) - like Stalker, Snake Eyes would probably be a SSG given his time in service, minus the few years he left the military to train in Japan.
Scarlett (O2) - probably better suited as an officer of military intelligence.
Those all make perfect sense in the context of working off of the original early 1980s setting and having to take into account their ages and such based on what we know about some of the characters' service history in Vietnam. I'd probably go a step further and "demote" Hawk to a major or even a captain to make him even more of a "boots on the ground" type and not just a desk driver. I'd always imagined that the original 1982-83 ARAH GI Joe concept worked best as a company-sized Army element.
