Without getting too much into the social psychology of things, I think a number of enlisted men will always have some level of resentment or distrust towards young second lieutenants/ensigns. A big part of platoon-level
esprit de corps
is the sense of camaraderie between personnel, and a lot of that is built on the shared experiences of "coming up" through the enlisted ranks. The overwhelming majority of young second lieutenants, whether they come from ROTC, OCS, or an Academy, are excluded (whether in fact or through misperception) from many of those shared experiences. But that resentment and distrust is almost always transitory... enlisted men and women will trust their officers if those officers prove themselves to be worthy of that trust over time.

As a kid, I don't think I ever played with anyone who actually liked the HAVOC. When it came to choosing vehicles for those big playground battles, it was always left out (although the mini-hovercraft it comes with was always popular).
