Another example: an ex girlfriend and I were discussing missionary work (this was circa 1990) and I told her that it could be interesting to work in the European countries where Communisim had fallen, since many people there had not been free to worship in decades (not trying to preach, trust me). She had no clue what I was talking about. On the other hand, my best friend went to the same college and majored in history. After working in high finance for over 10 years, he now works in a school and loves it, but says most of his time is spent on paperwork and discipline. And yes, he does know a great deal about history and loves historical movies. Then there's my father, who taught Spanish at the same school for nearly 40 years. He coached basketball, swimming and track for a while, but eventually stopped.
I'm very glad to hear about your interest in Missionary work. And please understand, that I'm not trying to diminish the contributions of the many wonderful, dedicated teachers out there. And I have no doubt that one of the biggest obstacles is having to deal with all the regulations, state guidelines, and discipline problems would certainly be frustrating. I certainly wouldn't want to teach.
I suppose that I'm always surprised when Americans act shocked when our students are outperformed on standardized tests by students from other countries. I always think: why are you so shocked? You went to college; you know who the education majors were.
I think it's a systemic problem with the education industry. If someone majors in education, it's much easier for them to become a teacher. But why would that be, when the people who majored in a specific subject have a terrible time getting licensed to teach. It's ridiculous.
When I graduated from Duke, I went home and there was some amount of uncertainty about whether or not I would be working at a Church - the Bishop was uncertain if there was a place to put me. So, I went to several private schools to see if they needed a teacher for "religion" or "Western Civilization" or "Intro to Philosophy" or any of the subjects my education would qualify me to teach.
I spoke with a Principle, and he said this, "I'm supposed to try to hire licensed teachers. If none apply for the position, then I can offer it to you." I thanked him and said, "Yes, sir, but I don't understand. I have 2 Masters Degrees from Duke University. Do all of your licensed teachers have those credentials?" He laughed and said, "Of course not, but those are the guidelines."
The education industry takes care of it's own... thus perpetuating a cycle of mediocrity.
