IIRC, Hama's always handed in full and detailed scripts that the artist works from, panel-by-panel, as opposed to the "Marvel method" popularized by Stan Lee: where the writer gives the artist the plot (sometimes just two or three sentences!), the artist creates a sequence of panels that conform to the plot, and then the writer writes the dialogue to fit the artist's sequential images.
The "Marvel method" used to be real popular back in the day, but I think it's fallen out of favour now, which is why you get a lot of static-looking and stiff comic book art these days--artists are losing their sense of dynamism and spontaneity because they're so busy sticking to the scripts. Artists in the 1960s and 1970s had a lot more creative control over the narrative because they were actively involved in the storytelling process. Of course, not every artist has the storytelling skills of old school Marvel method greats like Jack Kirby or Gil Kane, and I think that's one of the reasons why the "Marvel method" has fallen into disuse. A lot of the most popular artists these days (and going as far back as the mid-1980s) are more concerned with illustrating as opposed to storytelling. A talent for rendering is great and it's a prerequisite for being a good artist in most any field, but without a refined ability to tell a story through gesture and staging, a comic book artist might as well be illustrating posters, so I can understand why these days, the bulk of the storytelling responsibility is now the writer's.
