I try not to get too involved in these "vs" threads (they never end well), but I'd like to chime in with some thoughts as a person who has used Macs and Windows/Linux-based PCs extensively, to counter some of the misguided statements put forward in the few pages of this thread that I've read:
There's very little truth to the oft-stated notion that Macs are "virus-proof." The fact of the matter is, the Mac OS in its various incarnations is not inherently "more secure" than a Windows or Linux-based OS in a technical sense. The perception that they are safer stems from the interplay of virus writers' behaviour and platform ownership: more people own PCs, so it makes sense for a virus writer looking for notoriety or the widest range of infection to target the most widely owned home computing platform. Additionally, the Mac-owning community is smaller, so when a particularly virulent infection takes hold of the community, solutions spread relatively fast. With the Mac community getting bigger though, we're already seeing more and more viruses and associated malware specifically targeting Mac platforms.
There's very little to differentiate current Macs and Windows PCs in terms of hardware architecture these days. Back in the 1990s, sure, Macs and Windows machines were vastly divergent in their hardware configurations, as Apple was a big supporter of IBM's PowerPC/RISC hardware whereas Windows was married to the x86/CISC architecture exemplified by Intel and AMD. But Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in 2005 that they would begin transitioning to Intel-based x86/CISC hardware and just about every new Mac produced since 2006 is built from the same general components as a typical mid to high-end "Windows machine." Ironically, one of the closest things we have now to a "classic" multi-core PowerPC machine like the Macs of yesteryear in terms of CPU design is Microsoft's XBox360.
As I'd alluded to before in a previous post, the primary reason the perceived difference between Mac OS-based machines and Windows-based machines persists is because of long-standing social and economic perceptions (accurate or not) about the type of person who would prefer one over the other, not because those differences actually exist between the hardware.
In terms of OS functionality, there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut and reliable method of telling which OS is better (and believe me, I've spent the past several years looking for one). It all boils down to user preference. The analogy I like to make when it comes to Mac and Windows proponents arguing over which is better is that it's like a Toyota Matrix/Voltz owner arguing with a Pontiac Vibe owner over which car is better (internally and mechanically, both the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe are made from the same components, with only the sheet metal covering and cabin appointments being different). What they're actually arguing about is subjective corporate/brand loyalty, but each believes that they're arguing for the empirically superior position.
