Yeah, I agree that the last 4 years of Marvel's GI Joe comic were pretty bad compared to what had gone before, both in the writing and the art. I think part of the reason is that Hama had already scratched his creative itch, so to speak, on the earlier GI Joe, GI Joe Special Missions, and the vastly underrated Nth Man comics and was simply going through the motions on the main GI Joe title by the time the 1990s rolled around. Couple that with the added complications of working with Hasbro's creative restrictions and in retrospect, I think it's amazing that the quality on the book was maintained for as long as it did before things eventually went south.

The art on the DDP books did pick up around the WWIII arc, but I could never get into the DDP "house style" (best exemplified by Tim Seeley). Just too "superhero-y" for my tastes. Everybody had the same cut physiques with muscle groups somehow showing through BDUs, cheekbones jutting out of people's faces, and indistinct, generic facial structures.
