As a buyer, I always try to notify the seller of what's going on, but as a seller, I also try to be as cool about it as possible because I know that things happen and in this economy crap happens.
So yeah...I'd say wait 5-7 days, then if there's still no payment, contact them. Speaking as a seller and a buyer, I'd say that's reasonable and fair.
EDIT: And just to let you know, I'm speaking as a seller who has had to file a complaint. Just be reasonable, especially in this crappy economy. Give your buyers about a week with no contact, then try to get a hold of them and if they don't respond within 2 days or so, then proceed with further action. That is just plain fair. Others will say you should try to screw them within 3-4 days, but I totally disagree as someone who's spent plenty of time on BOTH sides of the equation. It's all about goodwill on BOTH sides.
I understand about the economy. I've had to back out of purchases before. I wouldn't have a problem with the buyer backing out as long as they contacted me to explain the situation. This was a big ticket item(sold for $100) and I need to relist it if they don't want it.
