The unique thing about it is that Hawaii is a melting pot of Asian cultures (mostly migrant plantation workers), so kajukenbo incorporates eskrima/kali from the Philippines, Kodokan judo and Shotokan karate from Japan, and chuan fa from Southern China. Can't really speak intelligently about it, though, and all I can offer on the subject is pure conjecture... I imagine it would be very similar to any number of the emergent practical arts of the 20th century: fewer and simpler techniques, concentration on situational awareness, an emphasis on "dirty boxing" and low kicks.
For a time, just about every high school kid in the Philippines had to study the basics of Modern Arnis (a standardized version of eskrima/kali that focuses on single and double stick-fighting developed by Remy Presas based on traditional arts) as part of the physical education curriculum. I don't know if it's still compulsory, though, as there's been a lot of changes to the educational system since I moved to Canada (last I heard, national service for college/university males no longer involves two-year mandatory military training). I went to a terribly violent high school in the Philippines in an area that was just at the edge of a region known for internecine hostilities, so you could very well imagine how much worse things became once students started practicing Modern Arnis... we had to provide our own batons and bring them to school, and stick/baton fights and knife fights would often break out between gangs just outside of campus, we'd have random police friskings every now and then (
balisongs
were a popular concealed weapon), and I even recall a three-day stretch when classes had to be cancelled because a tribal war from an adjoining province threatened to spill over into our school (students belonging to rival clans had started attacking each other on campus with knives and machetes). Crazy stuff.
Thats my understanding of it, its basically do whatever you need to to be the one who walks away from the fight. Theres a couple training centers within 15 minutes of me and one also teaches Eskrima which is something I've been thinking of getting into as a way of learning better baton skills so when I finally get hired on as a LEO. My boss is in his 50's so my guess is that it was still required.
I definately would not have wanted to be in the middle of those fights. I think this has been covered before but which joes have Eskrima or Silat training? Or if there is nothing specified who would be ,ost likely? Someone like Outback I would think would need to be skilled in the use of bladed weapons.
