etc.
All the "official" Special Operations-capable units of the US military are seconded to USSOCOM (the United States Special Operations Command). USSOCOM is composed of/divided into ARSOC (Army), MARSOC (Marines), AFSOC (Air Force) & NAVSPECWARCOM (Navy). While all four sub-commands jointly operate to a degree not seen in the regular armed forces, they are still thought of as having some degree of autonomy, both from each other, and USSOCOM.
Here's a brief rundown of the units that make up each component:
ARSOC:
The 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th Army Special Forces Groups along with the 19th and 20th National Guard Special Forces Groups (what most people colloquially refer to as "Green Berets")
The 75th Ranger Regiment
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (the Night Stalkers)
The 4th PSYOP Group
the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade
The 56th, 801th, 445th, and 900th Chemical Reconnaissance Detachments
the JFK Special Warfare Center & School - includes four Training Battalions, a Support Battalion, an NCO Academy, and a Medical Training Center
The Special Operations Sustainment Brigade - includes a special operations signal battalion, a brigade troops battalion, a support cell, and a liaison element
MARSOC:
The Special Operations Adviser Group
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Special Operations Battalions
The Special Operations Support Group
The USMC Special Operations School
AFSOC:
The 23rd Air Force - composed of the 11th Intelligence Squadron, the 18th Flight Test Squadron, and the 623rd Air & Space Operations Center
The Air Force Special Operations Training Center
The 1st, 27th, 193rd, and 919th Special Operations Wings
The 352nd and 353rd Special Operations Groups
The 720th Special Tactics Group
The 19th Special Operations Squadron (Flight School)
The Hurlburt Field Special Tactics Squadron
The 29th Civil Engineer Squadron
The 280th Combat Communications Squadron
The 107th, 146th, and 181st Weather (Combat Meteorology) Flights
The 227th Special Operations Flight
NAVSPECWARCOM:
NAVSPECWAR Group One - composed of SEAL Teams 1, 3, 5 and 7 as well as NAVSPECWAR Units 1 & 3, a support/logistics unit, and a training detachment
NAVSPECWAR Group Two - composed of SEAL Teams 2, 4, 8 and 10 as well as NAVSPECWAR Unit 2, the RM Poole SEAL detachment, a support/logistics unit, and a training detachment
NAVSPECWAR Group Three - composed of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams 1 & 2
NAVSPECWAR Group Four - composed of Special Boat Teams 12, 20 & 22
NAVSPECWAR Group Eleven - composed of Navy Reserve SEAL Teams 17 & 18
The NAVSPECWAR Center - composed of 5 CTR detachments, an arctic operations training detachment (Detachment Kodiak), a mountain warfare training detachment (La Posta), an Advanced NAVSPECWAR Training detachment/facility, and the Naval Support Activity
Besides the four branch-specific components of USSOCOM, there's also JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command), an elite component of the already elite USSOCOM, tasked specifically with counterterrorism, hostage rescue, special reconnaissance, and other high-risk special operations.
JSOC:
1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, a.k.a. "Delta Force" - primarily composed of Army Ranger and Army SF personnel, although the only unwaiverable prerequisite for joining is airborne qualification.
United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group, a.k.a. DEVGRU, a.k.a. "SEAL Team Six" - The Navy's equivalent of Delta Force, widely considered to be the best "pure" counterterrorism unit in USSOCOM.
The 24th Special Tactics Squadron - An Air Force unit primarily composed of combat controller commandos, pararescuemen, and combat weathermen.
Task Force 11 - classified joint-service unit drawn primarily from Delta Force, DEVGRU, the Army's SF Groups, the Ranger regiment and the SEAL Teams. In previous years, has been called Task Force 88, Task Force 145, and Task Force 6-26. Rumoured to include a small number of SAS and SBS operators from the UK on exchange programs and subject matter experts from the FBI, CIA, and DEA. The task force isn't a permament unit, but is a contingency-based one.
Joint Aviation Unit - primarily composed of rotary wing aviators & support personnel drawn from ARSOC and AFSOC
Joint Communications Unit - composed of expert communications specialists from all four branches (primary manning source is the Army and Air Force)
Intelligence Support Activity - The Army's special operations-capable human-intelligence collection/counterintelligence unit
Technical Intelligence Unit - composed of expert TECHINT analysts from all four branches (primary manning source is the Army)
Signals Intelligence Branch - composed of expert SIGINT analysts from all four branches (primary manning source is the Army)
Hope that helps explain it to you.
