New October Guard stuff:
Daina, Shturmovik & Zubenko
Design notes:
Daina was changed from a former CSSR soldier to a modern Czech Republic marksman (markswoman? marksperson?). The Czech Republic is one of the few nations that allow women to fill combatant roles in the military. The Czechs actually have a distinguished history with regards to female snipers, the most famous Czech female sniper being Marie Ljalková, who had 30 confirmed kills and dozens of unconfirmed kills fighting in the defense of the Soviet Union from invading Nazi Germany forces during World War II (she was awarded the Soviet Order of the Red Star for her gallantry in action). She would later become the lead instructor for one of the Soviet Union's regimental sniper schools before being commissioned as a medical officer (Ljalková earned a doctor of medicine degree whilst working as a marksmanship instructor). I tried to keep faithful to the original comic book design, but there were some inevitable changes stemming from updating her to a Czech Republic soldier. She no longer wears an
ushanka
, although I think the hat worn by female servicemen in the Czech Army retains the basic "high & round" shape. I was originally going to give her the Vorona code-name that they used in the later DDP comics, but I've never known Daina as "Vorona," (or "Volga," which was the codename the Hasbro people gave a repainted Lady Jaye figure that was supposed to be Daina) so I elected to keep the Daina name.
"Shturmovik" is my take on Stormavik. I modified the spelling to be more in-keeping with how the Russian word is transliterated (Shturmovik literally means "Storm Bird"). Kept the basic design of the 2005 toy which in turn was based on the old 1982 design by Herb Trimpe). Gave him a proper-coloured blue VDV beret, though (the toy had a sand-coloured beret). They never revealed what his real name was in the comcis, so I just made one up for him. I gave him the name "Foma Sokolov" which is basically Russian for "Tom DeFalco," the editor of the issue of GI Joe where the Oktober Guard first appeared in (issue #6, December 1982). DeFalco and Trimpe were the ones responsible for coming up with the designs and names of the original Oktober Guard (can't remember why Hama wasn't involved... I think he just wasn't into the idea of making a Soviet version of the GI Joe team... I read or heard somewhere that Hama felt that making a "Soviet GI Joe" was too cheesy and risked trivializing the issues surrounding the Cold War -- could just be one of those urban myths, though).
"Zubenko" is my take on Sgt. Misha Zubenkov, one of the newer Oktober Guard characters from later in the original GI Joe series. I changed his name in the filecard to "Mikhail Zubenko" though, since "Misha" is actually short for "Mikhail" and I'm pretty sure "Zubenkov" violates the rules of Russian patronymic surname formation/spelling. I tried to stay true to his original comic book depiction, giving him a moustache (the toy was clean-shaven) and a tan M38 "Panama" tropical hat (the toy had a dark green one), which is sort of the Russian equivalent to the West's "boonie" hat.

Thanks for looking!
